Self-care tips without the fancy bubble baths and positive insta worthy quotes.

Self care is extremely trendy at the minute, with the likes of #SelfCareSunday becoming the norm. I think this is great, we all need more time for ourselves to look after our own mental and physical wellbeing. But having said that, self care is much deeper than just having a bubble bath and hash tagging it on Instagram! Don’t get me wrong I love a good bubble bath but that isn’t really going to solve all my problems.

Lately I’ve had a major overhaul in my life and am in the process of making some pretty big changes for the better. This has all stemmed from these key issues I realised I needed to work on. I’m a chronic people pleaser, I have a habit of always saying yes to everyone and everything! I over-commit yourself to things and leave myself feeling burnt out?

For me self care has meant setting up boundaries for myself. It’s meant no more people pleasing if it’s going to negatively affect me. It’s meant sometimes saying no and leaving it at that. Sometimes we feel that we can’t just say no and we have to give a huge excuse or backstory. Saying no is okay.

Here’s a list of my not so glam self care tips:

1. Change your bed sheets - this one always instantly boosts my mood. I feel so refreshed when getting into a clean bed at the end of the day.

2. Drink water - when you feel hydrated it's easier to get things done, feel more energised, and it's good for your skin.

3. Forgive yourself when you make a mistake - stop beating yourself up if you do something wrong. It's completely okay to make mistakes and learn from them. We're only human and nobody is perfect.

4. Take medication if you need to - whether you need medication for phyiscal health or mental health to function in day to day life. There's no shame in that, do what you need to get by.

5. Don’t be afraid to say no - This is part of setting boundaries for yourself and being a bit selfish. You have to put yourself first and stop people pleasing all the time.

6. Go to seep and wake up at an appropriate time - since changing my sleeping pattern it's made a massive difference in all aspects of my life. My concentration, mood, and general wellbeing is great at the minute and that's definitely down to sleeping propperly.

7. Stop procrastinating & get things done that you’ve been putting off - There's nothing worse than feeling overwhelmed and the list of things to pile up, when this happens its usually much harder to get ontop of it all. The best thing to do is tackle it all head on and just dive right in and get things done.

8. Declutter your space - I can't get anything done if my space is messy. When you get things clean and orgaised, and know where everything is you just feel better. It saves time looking for things or getting distracted and makes for an all round better environment.

9. Reach out for help if you need to - It's always okay to ask for help. It might seem scary and daunting but it's always better to share your problems or thoughts with someone else to help you process them and get support if you need.

10. Spend time with your loved ones or take time alone depending on how you feel - sometimes I depend a lot on others, and sometimes I need my own space. It's up to you to assess your needs and spend time with people if you've not socialised in a while, or take time for you if you feel overwhelmed.

That’s just 10 of my realistic (no face masks or bubble baths needed) self care tips for when you need a boost!
